Oh man, I WISH they would have done a scene like this in the movie! I mean, I understand with 15 main characters you gotta keep the plot moving, but still, a little character moment like this would have been greatly appreciated.
Just a suggestion-not much is known about what he's experienced or had to do during his life as a thief and so if he's spent years masking his emotions incase it showed weakness someone could use against him it may just be his first reaction to close himself off emotionally when something happens until he's 100% sure it's ok to let it all out.
I'm just saying that it's all on the spur of the moment. And Beorn's house is nothing different there will be the same dwarves around and I think Nori can feel quite safe in that company, just look at Thorin, I don't think that he's the one who always shows his emotions.
I get the impression Nori doesn't go in for public displays of affection even if it is between family-maybe they'll have a moment once they're at Beorn's where they're safe and have a bit more privacy?
I think Nori has some sort of delayed reaction syndrome. Did you ever notice when the very first warg attacks the company, it pounces on Dori, and Nori just watches in a daze while Dwalin kills it? I'm still holding out hope that DOS has a little moment near the beginning where Nori checks in on Ori to make sure he's okay. It'd be a great way to clarify onscreen that he's connected to Dori and Ori and that he really was concerned for them in the tree scene.
Very nice piece, by the way. You did a good job conveying the emotions of all three brothers, and I like how the panels are scattered around so you can look at them in any order you want.
Just saw the EE last night and loved it! I was so glad to see Nori's "keepsake" scene in Goblin Town. XD
I just had a crazy thought about the tree scene -- maybe the movie didn't show Nori's reaction because there was no reaction to show. Maybe he never even noticed that Dori and Ori were in trouble because (as usual) he was too preoccupied with his own situation to consider anyone else. That would make a great scene in DoS if he found out after the fact that his brothers almost died and he did nothing to try and help them.
It always bothered me, that they almost killed Dori and Ori and didn't even show Noris reaction to it. It must have been terrible for him! You drew this little story really cute, I wish it was in the movie like this!
